One must also remember the historical context of these songs. Many of these were written and performed in the early '60's, at a time when Blacks were fighting for the rights guaranteed in our Consitution. The artists knew that these songs were to be for the "entertainment" of whites for the most part. From this perspective it is easy to understand why a performer would try to preserve some of his or her "racial indentity". This could be thought of as a "statement" of cultural character.

Interesting comment. I will guess that it is not race related. Many times different parts of words are accentuated or not, in order to make the song flow according to the artists desires. If you suggest that this artist does not know the proper pronunciation of "prayer", and how it is used as a part of speech, I would beg to differ! Please consider the great '60's hit "Innagodadavida" by Iron Butterfly. They were actually saying "In the Garden of Eden", but no one could discern that!

I say a little prayer for you? This is what the song would say, she does not pronounce it loudly, but the proper use of the word would be "prayer", which is how any English speaker would interpret it. Was this your question?

Everybody knows this perfomance is just..well it's simply subime. Aside from the lovely music and beautiful soul singing though, I'm struck by what this lyric evokes: the magic of being in love. How I'd love to experience a taste of such perfection. Smokey had it wrong, actually. A taste of honey is not worst, but BETTER than none at all!! I think its just the minority or wotever of short men who try to act big and mouth off to people, and are just assholes in general because they are insecure. that's a new interpretation to me. interesting one though. My interpretation is that that the song is satrical, sung from the perspective of an intolerant bigot. Rod Stewart's a great singer and, as this epic proved, a great songwriter. This song may have come out the year I was born (which was 1976) but lyrically and musically has held up very well and stood the test of time very nicely. I always liked the song musically but I didn't know the song was about a gay friend of Rod's who was horrifically killed by some dirtballs. People should like people regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, disabilities (in my case, I'm autistic) and so forth.

So what if they are lip synching? There are valid reasons for doing that sometimes. People shouldn't overanalyze things so much...it takes from the enjoyment of the music and Brian does make enjoyable music that's for sure.

and if anyone has any doubts about whether or not this is pre recorded or not, just ask yourselves this...why did they wait so long after the count in to start playing?...cos the producers had to quiet the mics and instruments and start the record playing...but if you still need proof watch brians lip sync fail at 0:25 when he says "brothers"...i am a long time fan so im not criticising him, but it is lip syncing..no doubt. great song though, and a legend of an artist

yes you are right vegas, it is very obvious that this is just a video cut for the track, but aside from that, you can really hear brians homage for his brothers in this track, there may not be direct reference but its all in there, in between the lines and the music, you can feel it

Yes it sounds great but you do realize they are lip-syncing right? It's very well done but those are not studio mics they are singing into, they are rehearsal mics. And music this complex is never recorded altogether but in layers. The sound on the vocals is clearly being generated from studio mics not those cheapies. Keep in mind that it would be virtually impossible to get so many notes to be precise, even for such amazing musicians. But this is a promo video so it is understandable. Good tune

I think if you owned that album you'd understand a bit more from the liner stuff. The song, to me, is not so much logical, maybe, as just a cry of frustration. It's right in there, actually:"you said I was childish & you'll say it now". Of course the same thing could happen anywhere, but it's still disheartening. You could probably broaden it to say that she feels like she doesn't want to live anywhere on the planet, at least at that moment. That's just how I relate to it, anyway.
