so, what's the message of this movie? i'd say it's a critique of: omipresent surveillance and dominance, technifying human behavior to benefit corporations- transforming people into machines for the pursuit of production and economic growth, submitting the worker to the tyranny of time and hierarchy making them cogs and gears in industrial capitalism and showing the injustice of class inequality. and anyone that challenges this fucked up system is deemed insane or a criminal!

Chaplin is so very real and down to earth, and touches on the problems that still plague the modern world. The sets are so wonderful it makes me wonder if there are some real factories involved, as those sets must have cost a fortune in the 1930s. They look fantastic, but so do so many of the factories from the early 20th century. His then-wife is a great lead actress, Chaplin always had an eye for women. The lack of visible makeup really works to modernise this last silent work from the master.
