William Primrose Plays Paganini Caprice 24 Posted by: AbsoluteZ3R0
Video duration: 182 seconds Global video hits: 19165 I know this is already up, but this has much nicer sound quality (although it's still out of sync). This is an extraordinary display of virtuosity on the highly unappreciated viola. Although the interpretation is not as nice as in his recording, the sheer technique is amazing. His renditions of some of the Paganini caprices make a lot of violin renditions seem unimpressive. Thank you for this wonderful concert. I didn't think the viola could be light enough to play Paganini well but I was wrong. I wouldn't try it but it is a treat to see Primrose do it. The film shows real action and he is a master. Jesse Chene

vaust... I agree with you 2000%, most of my violin colleagues say the same thing. Jaesango, not all violas are of equal size/quality. Violins are acoustically perfect for there sizes (confirmed fact), but violas have to be physically ridiculously large to own up to that "full" sound you mentioned. With thus said, executing technique is not as easy for one as it is for the opther. Technique for violin can be applied to viola, but the application in music can be very different.
By: vaust. on 26 Oct 08, 16:31:50
I am saying all of this from experience.
By: Jaesango. on 26 Oct 08, 06:09:30
err in my opinion, gettinig full sounds out of both instruments are equal. Also, you can't exactly say shifting on violin is easier because shifting is all muscle memory. If you learned Viola first then shifting on violin would be harder and vice versa. The vibrato on Viola is good as it allows you to widen your vibrato and not sound like you're getting electrocuted when playing the violin. The chords are mostly your bowing and a little bit of it is the instrument but overall it's the same.
By: vaust. on 26 Oct 08, 05:33:19
@ Jaesango You're the first primarily violinist I've heard say that. Most violinists I know are (not to offend) used to the ease of how much less movement is required for shifting, or even hitting the 5th above the string, as well as less trouble with vibrato (for the same reasons), and less trouble with getting the full sound out of the note (with 3 or 4 part chords it's hard to get this on a viola IMO), since the strings are thinner, and most have a synthetic core.

the viola is a respectable instrument "period" and it sounded well too it would feel like a loss not to hear one in the music world

Woops sorry damn i always get it wrong. XD at festershred.

I've only been playing Viola for one year and i bet anything i could still play better than you.
By: tjkastelic. on 24 Oct 08, 08:57:55
How is it that in an argument between violists and violinists, it was the violist who was actually able to articulate herself and bring something useful to a thread? I don't know... I think I get dumber every day I play viola, but at least I'm not half the asshole that the violin made me. :D Primrose is pretty rad... too bad the sound quality is so shabby.
By: danielwowman. on 21 Oct 08, 15:32:39
i think that to
By: TylerProdutions. on 15 Oct 08, 03:22:02
umm, gee thanks... your so nice to all the violists out there, no offence or anything, but you are being a snobby first violinst.
By: Gesundheitsschadlich. on 11 Oct 08, 06:06:07
he should do paganini caprice 1
By: xephyr417. on 11 Oct 08, 05:41:31
im watching it cuz i appreciate all music... and i misclicked:] (srsly it was an accident) violins screw up the string orchestra??? tell me this... without the violins could you HAVE a string orchestra? however it must be noted that we'd be fine without the violas... in fact ive played in quartets without violas... 2nds and cellos cover their part... i have no problem with violas, i respect them and i play the violn bcuz i thought that it was a beautiful instrument the very first time i heard it
By: TylerProdutions. on 11 Oct 08, 04:33:03
yeah, thanks for your kind words to all the viloists out there... you probably only played the violin because you didn't care what you played and wanted to play what everyone else played btw: if violins weren't so popular (and didn't screw up the string orchestra) violas would have been next in line and why are you even watching this anyways?
By: sum30guy. on 08 Oct 08, 21:22:25
actually it is the other way around most violinist find it very difficult to switch to viola meanwhile violas find it easy to switch to violin
By: festershred. on 08 Oct 08, 05:32:35
ya same here lol im a first violinist could make the other violists in my orchestra look like shit. not being a snobby first violinist im just saying. once you play all of the demanding ass violin repetoire its not hard to play viola. still primrose is fuckin badass
By: Violagrl10. on 07 Oct 08, 20:00:34
Yes. The viola is bigger (there's more room for sound to travel) and requires thicker strings/heavier bow. With this setup, the instrument takes more time to play cleaner, smoother passages (the viola is slower than violin; the key is proper anticipation). Bigger hands will not always be the answer. It depends on the viola/alert player. If you once played violin, widen (slow) your vibrato, and remember that the bow needs more applied forces for cleanliness.
By: Jaesango. on 06 Oct 08, 00:02:03
response of viola is different from violin? what do you mean? i wanna know more since i'm playing viola right now too
By: Violagrl10. on 05 Oct 08, 23:56:12
The technique for viola is similar but not exactly the same to the violin. The viola's response is so much slower than violin, so bowing, fingering, and tone have to be learned differently than you would on violin.Plus, the violin vibrato does not acoustically go well with the viola. To sum up what I'm saying, neither instrument is harder than the other, it's just that there's different types of effort that need to be put into either instrument.
By: xephyr417. on 01 Oct 08, 07:08:12
also this piece was rewritten specifically for viola... you cant say its harder on the viola... the difficulty should be the same roughly... seeing as how everything thing is shifted a 5th downward for the viola...
By: xephyr417. on 01 Oct 08, 07:06:35
no no u misunderstand:] what im saying mainly is that the violas in my orch suck... it was a kinda off the wall point to make... but ive attempted playing a viola... and i didnt suck:] at all... the fundamentals are nearly identical... but i do agree with the point that composers were unfamiliar with the viola... there seriously gyped when it comes to music... the're so versatile... they have the power and the deep resonating tone of the cello, but also a high range similar to that of a violin..
By: Jaesango. on 01 Oct 08, 06:47:20
well no duh, most pieces played in the orchestra are by composers who wasn't as familiar with the viola. And besides, the viola is labeled more as the "harmony" rather than the "melody" violin. I switched over to viola over the summer and i am first chair but that doesn't mean the instrument is easy. The songs are much, MUCH simpler. and unless you can play viola, you can't say it's easier because viola requires a bigger hand, and if you don't have that you're screwed.
By: xephyr417. on 01 Oct 08, 03:23:01
they must be about the same... i play violin but if i played viola id be first chair in my orch easy...
By: festershred. on 01 Oct 08, 03:18:55
u should look up my private teacher todd ehles videos you might like some of his techniques they may be helpful,
