This may sound funny but the first time I heard this song was on The Dukes Of Hazzard. Luke sang a duet of it with his girlfriend. I loved the song and wondered what it was called and who originally did it. Knowing what it's about makes it even cooler. I just visited relatives in Yucca Valley and stopped by Joshua Tree National Park, where Gram loved to hang out. It's a surreal place and there's some great images of it here. Excellent vid, five stars.

Never heard of Emmylou Harris but she's got an amazing voice. In terms of Dave Mathews covering this song? I'm not a huge fan of Dave Mathews but I respect him as an artist. However, I think this was an absolute horrible rendition of this song. Dave Mathews' style is no where near being suitable for a song like this. Someone else should have definately covered this song for this special occasion. I can think of a number of artists who would have done this song justice. No offense to his fans.

When I first went looking for this song I just expected to find Neil Young's version. I'd never even heard of Ian or Sylvia Tyson. Frankly, I expected to be a bit embarrassed for the guy when I started to listen. Man, was I wrong. This, in my opinion, is the most beautifully executed version of the song that's available. A few things...I agree, this is one of the classics from the era, and I always tuned in to listen back then. Emmylou can still sing. While some lose their vocal range, she still has it. As a live performance, she's not changing the way she sang it when it was first out...a good thing. And finally, I respect that she hasn't dyed her hair. She's still incredibly beautiful.

Interesting that you comment on Sylvia singing with him on this song, because she didn't on the original recording, which appeared on the Vanguard album, _So Much for Dreaming_, I believe. But she did add some nice harmony on the re-recording on the Columbia album, _Ian & Sylvia with David Wilcox_. Of course, even that was "years ago" at this point.

I watched an interview with Gram Parson on youtube where he said part of Emmylou's harmony skills was her ability top sing with anybody if she could see their eyes... that this telegraphed the changes and their style or something like that. The video is called something like Gram Parsons talks about Emmylou Harris; it's still photos with him talking about her.

It is also characteristic of generous-spirited artists that they cross boundaries from time-to-time, often with mixed results, but so what-- it's an expression of their taste and admiration, if not always their excellence.
