At 45 seconds into the interview he sets up this whole staged event. It was Andy(real one..?) playing an Andy on Lettermen who earlier played a differnt Andy (Hollywood Andy) who played the "bad guy" at the wrestling shows. Too me, it is the overall situation that is the comedy in my opinion. Remember, this is 1982 or 83 when wrestling was not as big or as cartoonish as it became during the mid 80's. After 1985, he would have never done this routine had he lived and not done it previously.

Kaufman was a genius and he always stuck it to the man. Sometimes his main purpose was to amuse himself at the expense of the public and what they believed. Andy Kaufman was a master in the art of satiric masking and subtlety. Even if you knew his style, even if you appreciated it, he made you feel uneasy at times. He was a genius in his own right. He's very similar to Mark Twain, though beyond that, he took a theatrical approach. He was reading a chapter to a book with one page written and 30 blank. The audience chose their destination, unwittingly. He was a master of manipulation and an incredible mind.

I love these Youtube clips of Andy Kaufman. He's a different character in every appearance. Steve Martin was totally prepared for this. But then Andy outsmarted Steve by not putting on an act for once, and actually just being himself and answering the questions straight! He was always one step ahead of every one!:)

I concur. Andy was on the show to explain himself: I can see Steve is really interested to know about Andy's technique, which neither he nor the audience could understand completely by then. I think Steve respected Andy's career, but I also think Andy didn't respect anyone else's career more than his own. That's what made him a legend.

If you are not sure about what I wrote, read carefully: I have never said Andy was more "successful" than Steve, which would be proposterous. In brief, I said that 1) Steve's comedic style, even though he was never a cast member, is clearly due to his SNL years whereas Andy's was totally unique and original; 2) dispensing with what we'd call traditional, Andy's legacy has remained as groundbreaking today as in its heyday. Andy's real face appears on this vid which means he felt OK with Steve.

I am not sure if you are implying that Martin did traditional comedy or if you lumped these two together, adding that Martin was not as succesful. Maybe you missed the 70's, but there is so much out there on his work, that you obviously would improve your argument if you know what you were talking about. Neither of these stars went a traditional route. Martin filled entire arenas doing a non-traditional show. He had a very sucessful time doing it, until he moved on from that part of his life.

RR kinda reminds of Jim Cameron. He was also always trying to stay ahead in tech yet also managed to make kickass movies. The day you decide not change is the day you become obsolete. This sadly is what my impression of JC . it looks like all the other land around there, plus, if you bought it for cheap, sight unseen, then that means it has no electric, water, sewage, and would cost about 200,000 to put it there. it's also 120degrees in the summer. hope you didn't plan on retiring there or something. you could hunt there in season, if you have a 4wheel drive or don't mind a long walk.

I believe I was looking at Ft. Mckavett instead of Ft. Mckissac. There is a dead house or a place where dead bodies were kept there. It was a very creepy place. Another good thing to do is follow the old forts trails. Fort Chadbourne near Bronte and Fort Phantom Hill, Fort Griffin and Fort Concho. Make sure you visit Fort Concho during the last of November. Christmas at old fort concho is fantastic.
